The flag of Suriname
The Flag of Suriname is formed by five horizontal bands of green (top,
double width), white, red (quadruple width), white, and green (double
width). There is a large, yellow, five-pointed star centered in the
red band.

Background:
First explored by the Spaniards in the 16th century and then settled
by the English in the mid-17th century, Suriname became a Dutch colony
in 1667.

Minister-President H. Aron held a contest, before independence day in
1975, to design a flag. The Azimullah judging committee selected the
J.H. Pinas design.

It was on November 25, 1975, that the flag of Suriname was
officially adopted. Right after Suriname became an independent country
and no longer under Netherlands. The former name of the country is
Dutch Guiana.
